Although it can be hard to relax during a dental emergency or a dental trauma, it is important for you to do so anyway. It is hard to rest because of the pain it causes you.
However, do not worry because there are things you can do to help relax until you get to see us or get to an emergency room.
Sedation By Inhaling Laughing Gas
Although it is mainly children who might need to inhale some gas to help them relax, some adults may need help relaxing too. To help children and adults relax either during a dental emergency to treat them or during a routine exam, giving them what they call laughing gas to breathe in will help them relax quite a bit.
Taking Medication By Pill or Syrup
Children and adults both can also try swallowing a pill or syrup that has relaxation medication inside it. The medicine will naturally be given to them by the dentist or emergency room doctor if they had to go to the E.R instead.
Taking Medication by Injection
Sometimes, laughing gas or swallowing a pill or syrup may not help people relax enough. If this is the case, taking medication to help them relax in the form of an injection may work better for them and quicker too.
If none of the above will work to help a person relax, you might have to try using I.V fluids. I.V fluids are medicine through the vein, and this is the quickest possible way to ensure the person relaxes enough to treat them during a dental emergency.
Although the above are great ways to help a person relax enough to treat them, they will eventually wear off, and the pain will happen. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to help you and call us right away if you need any help with anything at all.
